Users needed a simple way to book reliable home services without friction. Existing options were inconsistent, slow, and difficult to manage.

The brief: design and build a scalable mobile app with a seamless booking flow, real-time service management, and a consistent experience across iOS and Android.

The Problem

High-Trust Decision, Low-Confidence Experience

Hiring someone to enter your home is a high-trust decision, yet most local service marketplaces are fragmented, inconsistent, and unreliable. Customers struggle with unclear pricing, slow communication, uncertain availability, and lack of accountability.

Broken Booking Models

Platforms like TaskRabbit, Thumbtack, and Angi rely heavily on request-based quotes, back-and-forth messaging, and manual coordination. This increases friction and slows down decision making. There was a clear opportunity to build something more structured, predictable, and trust-centred.

The Process

1. Strategic Discovery

We began by structuring a focused research plan covering market context, problem framing, competitive landscape, user interviews, and hypothesis formation,  ensuring every design decision was grounded in evidence, not assumption.

2. Information Architecture & User Flows

User stories from research were distilled into clear journeys for both customers and service providers. I mapped every task flow and built lo-fi wireframes to validate logic before investing in visual design.

3. Component Based UI Design

Every UI element was built as a reusable Figma component first. This ensured visual consistency across 40+ screens and created a scalable design system that can grow with the product.

4. Usability Testing & Iteration

26 participants tested the platform across one-on-one remote sessions. Key insights led to three major design revisions — provider mode toggle redesign, onboarding preview flow, and a dedicated support section.

Solution

Booking-First Discovery Engine

We built a location-first discovery experience that surfaces nearby providers by category, with real-time availability and fixed pricing visible before a user even taps a profile. Complexity hidden, clarity delivered.

Unified Booking & Messaging Flow

The booking and messaging system was designed as a single unified flow — no context switching between apps. Clients and providers communicate, confirm, and transact entirely within Book Freelancer, reducing drop-off and building trust at every step.
